What Exactly Are Cat Fleas
What are cat fleas? Essentially they are parasites that have been around for millions of years longer than us humans have been around for, so they have had many years to learn how to adapt to our ever changing environment. They survive by living off the blood of animals and even humans.
These parasitic pests have been known to spread deadly diseases and viruses such as the black plague, Murine Typhus and many more. It is important to keep control over these pests when you find you have them in your home or on your cats.
These parasites survive in your carpets, furniture, and pretty much anywhere else in your home. They reproduce at a fast rate, and you would have an infestation in your home very easily if you do not use some form of treatment. Female fleas will lay eggs and they will form into larvae that look like grubs. The larvae will then grow into pupae, which then nestle into a cocoon, where they then lay in wait to catch your unsuspecting feline friend to walk by. Once the pupae has detected the warmth of your cat nearby, they will unzip their cocoons, and then jump onto your felines body or possibly yours. Some fleas’ jumps can be as high as 4 feet.
Spotting Cat Fleas
Cat fleas are very easy to spot around your home and a tell tail giveaway sign is the constant scratching your poor cat. They scratch because they need relief from flea bites. Cats’ may end up with red and irritated skin due to excessive scratching. The bite mixed with the sucking causes their skin to feel irritated, and in some cases have been known to bring a cat close to death when severely infested. This is due to loss of blood. So, you must give your cats the proper methods of treatment available.
Remember that fleas have different stages, from fleas to eggs to larvae and then pupae, so you must ensure you have completely treated and destroyed all stages of a fleas life cycle. This will prevent another infestation from reoccurring. Keep in mind that you must use treatment regularly or as directed for as long as you have your precious cats in your life. This will keep your family and cats protected.
